Tottenham has confirmed the sale of Brazilian defender Emerson Royal to AC Milan. The 25-year-old joined Spurs in 2021 from Barcelona, after impressing on loan at Real Betis. He made 31 Premier League appearances during the 2021/22 season, helping Tottenham secure a fourth-place finish under Antonio Conte.
Last season, Emerson played frequently in central defense due to a defensive injury crisis in Ange Postecoglou’s squad. AC Milan has been pursuing Emerson for several months, and the transfer, reportedly worth £12.8 million, was eventually agreed upon. Emerson has signed a four-year contract with the Rossoneri, with an option for an additional 12 months.
Emerson Royal departure is part of the ongoing rebuilding process under manager Ange Postecoglou, as he reshapes the squad. Tottenham has also seen midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg loaned to Marseille, Bryan Gil sent to Girona for the season, and Joe Rodon transferred to Leeds United.
On the incoming front, Tottenham recently signed striker Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, adding to previous acquisitions of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, along with the re-signing of Timo Werner on loan. Tottenham’s first Premier League match of the 2024/25 season is scheduled for next Monday against Leicester City.
