A CRICKETER died after suffering a heart attack during a match in India.
Vikas Negi, 34, collapsed during the clash between Mavericks XI and Blazing Bulls.
He was batting during the 14th over of the Mavericks XIs innings. Footage showed him walking up the wicket to congratulate batting partner Umesh Kumar, who had just hit a four.
But as his team-mate approached him to touch bats, Negi suddenly fell to the ground. Stunned players from both sides then rushed to his aid, attempting CPR to revive him.
Negi was then held up in a seating position as the shellshocked teams crowded around him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, in a car.
But tragically, despite the efforts made, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. At the time of the incident, Negi had scored seven runs off six deliveries, with the Mavericks XI scoreboard displaying 143 for 5 in 13.5 overs.
Following a brief lull in the match – which was being broadcast live on YouTube – the Mavericks set a target of 184 for the Bulls after scoring 183 for 9 in 19.2 overs.
However, the S&B India Annual Cricket Tournament match was then abandoned. The sad death comes just months after an Indian cricket fan tragically died aged 35 after suffering a heart attack.
Software engineer Jyotish Kumar Yadav collapsed during the World Cup final, which was won by Australia. Following India’s defeat he collapsed, quickly being rushed to Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia government general hospital.
He was then declared dead by medics.
