The Lions dominated Granada from start to finish, but need to find more goals to boost in their quest for fourth place

Athletic Club drew 1-1 at San Mamés against Granada CF as they stumble in the race for fourth place.

The Lions tried their best and could have won the game with a close-range effort from Iñaki Williams in the 85th minute.

Still sat in fifth place, the Zurigorri will have to wait for the result from Sunday’s clash between Alaves and Atletico Madrid at Mendizorrotza to see much they trail Los Colchoneros when they travel to the Metropolitano next week. For now, they are three points behind.

It was not an easy night. José Ramón Sandoval’s side took the lead in the fifth minute, with Gerard Gumbau’s corner going in after grazing Iñaki.

However, Los Leones did draw level before long. A dazzling 23rd minute move down the left flank saw Yuri Berchiche link up with Nico Williams.

Augusto Batalla tried to punch away the winger’s cross but hit it towards Gorka Guruzeta, who struck home with a quality volley. It was the forward’s 16th goal of the season, his 14th in LaLiga.

The Lions almost made it 2-1 shortly after as Oihan Sancet played through Guruzeta. The striker rounded Batalla, but Ignasi Miquel rushed back to clear the effort off the line.

Although Granada didn’t pose too many issues in attack, they were able to hold out for a point.

Iñaki had Athletic’s two big chances of the second half, the aforementioned volley and a left-footed shot which Batalla turned behind for a corner.

Towards the end, San Mames showed their displeasure with time-wasting tactics and some inconsistent refereeing decisions in 50/50 balls.
