Liverpool have confirmed that Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will soon depart the club when their contracts expire.

The two players will see their deals out until the end of the season with the club revealing that they will leave alongside boss Jurgen Klopp.

In one post on social media on Friday morning, Liverpool wrote: “Thiago Alcantara’s time with the Reds will come to an end this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

“A truly special player. Thank you for everything, Thiago.”

A second post also read: “Joel Matip will bid farewell to the Reds this summer after an eight-season spell during which he helped the club to some of its most memorable modern moments.

“Thank you for everything, Joel.”

Thiago signed for Liverpool in 2020 from Bayern Munich after being named in the UEFA Team of the Year and made 98 appearances for the club, scoring six goals.

Injuries dogged the Spaniard’s time at Anfield but when he played but he did win the FA Cup in 2022, as well as finishing runners-up in the Champions League that year.

This season, though, has been a tough one for the 33-year-old, who has made just once this season – a cameo appearance off the bench against Arsenal.

“It has been eight wonderful years here in Liverpool,” the 32-year-old said.

“I was allowed to be part of an exciting history with a great coach and an astonishing team in an extraordinary club. We have achieved great titles and have the best fans in the world.
